How To Make A Hot Toddy (Irish Whiskey Punch)

Culture

The Hot Toddy, although traditionally a Scottish drink, it's often made in Ireland to beat off man-flu or help with insomnia.

A well made Hot Toddy tastes delicious but never drink too many or you'll end up dancing on tables or worse yet, flat on your back.

What is needed for a Hot Toddy

Everyone has their own hot toddy recipe but the basics are almost the same.

  • 1 ½ teaspoons brown sugar
  • Boiling water
  • 1 measure of Irish Whiskey
  • 3 cloves
  • 1 slice of lemon

How to make a traditional Irish Hot Toddy

Heat the glass you wish to serve the hot toddy in, as this will prevent the glass from breaking when the hot liquid is poured in.

Add the sugar and dissolve in a little of the hot water.

Add the whiskey, cloves and the slice of lemon and fill up with the boiling water.

What whiskey should I use?

Really you could use any Whiskey to make a Hot Toddy but we do recommend that it at least be an Irish Whiskey such as Bushmills or Jameson Irish Whiskey.
