The Statutes of Kilkenny

Home > History > Middle Ages > The Normans > Statutes of Kilkenny

As time passed Irish Culture was so strong that it started to change the way of life for the Normans in Ireland. The Normans started speaking Irish, dressing like Irish people, also married into Irish families and started living by Irish traditions & customs.

Edward III was the King of England at the time seen this threat to their Empire and strongly disagreed on how the Normans in Ireland were behaving so a meeting was called in 1366. This meeting took place in Kilkenny and had laws passed to forbid Normans from speaking Irish, marrying into Irish families, playing Irish games and dressing like the Irish. These new laws were to be called "The Statutes of Kilkenny" which went ignored by many Normans except those living in a small East coast location named ‘The Pale’.
