A show rather than a group, Celtic Thunder was conceived by Sharon Browne and written and arranged by Phil Coulter and designed as a contemporary exploration of Celtic music, which means it falls to the pop dance side of the spectrum more than it does to the traditional side. The show was staged, recorded, and filmed in Dublin in August of 2007 and featured five male vocalists, Damian McGinty (only 14 years old when the show was recorded), Keith Harkin, Paul Byrom, Ryan Kelly, and George Donaldson, rotating leads through a set of traditional and contemporary songs, several of them written by Coulter. A CD and DVD of the event appeared from Decca in 2008. The quintet's 2009 sophomore effort, Take Me Home, was stocked with traditional Irish and Scottish ballads peppered with a handful of pop/rock covers, while 2010's It's Entertainment relied exclusively on commercial pop hits. ~ Steve Leggett, Rovi

Wonderful March 18, 2008 Joel David Chewning (SoCal) 12 out of 13 found this review helpful
I went to see this band in the early '90's. This is a wonderful and timeless collection of music. Some of it is traditional and some modern. Absolutely buy it.
Go Celtic Thunder February 29, 2008 Margaret (NYC) 14 out of 16 found this review helpful
This is a timeless disc with wonderful songs, wonderfully performed. I play it in the car all the time. It is My St Patrick's Day must have. Highly recommended.
Very easy to listen and rather uplifting December 29, 1998 13 out of 15 found this review helpful
This is one of my favourite celtic disks. Its songs have powerful rithm and strong music. You will be following the tunes in no time !. For all celtic music lovers.
Pay no attention to the one-star reviews March 31, 2009 Michael Cornett (Takoma Park, MD USA) 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
The one-star reviews are from people who ordered this in error, thinking it was that new celtic-flavored mainstream all-male band.
No offense to fans of that Celtic Thunder, but they're too mainstream pop and overproduced and just too...too....boy-band for my tastes.
THIS Celtic Thunder was a Baltimore-based Irish band in the 80s, that I believe is no longer around. (I could be wrong; somebody check on that?) They weren't a stadium act, they played the pubs and festivals and had a rollickin' time. They were down-to-earth Celtic, with loads of soul and authenticity, with songs about the hard times of immigration as well as joyous dance pieces and wry reflections on relationships. This CD may not sound as lavish or big-budget, but considering it was first recorded by a minor label in the 80s, it sounds pretty good. My favorite track is their version of the classic "Oft in the Stilly Night" which always has me wanting to sing along.
This is folksy, earthy music, the kind you go to a pub to hear, and have a great time with. They have another CD, out of print, simply called "Celtic Thunder" with a black-and-white cover; if you like this, look for that one as well.
